It was discovered on 20 July 2001, by astronomers of the [[Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking]] program at [[Palomar Observatory]] in California, United States. The asteroid was named for astronaut [[Laurel Clark]], who died in the [[Space Shuttle Columbia disaster]].<ref name="MPC-object" />

Laurelclark is a non-[[Asteroid family|family]] asteroid from the main belt's [[Background asteroid|background population]].<ref name="AstDys-object" /> It orbits the Sun in the [[Kirkwood gap|outer]] asteroid belt at a distance of 2.6–3.5&nbsp;[[Astronomical unit|AU]] once every 5 years and 3 months (1,928 days; [[semi-major axis]] of 3.03&nbsp;AU). Its orbit has an [[orbital eccentricity|eccentricity]] of 0.15 and an [[orbital inclination|inclination]] of 10[[Degree (angle)|°]] with respect to the [[ecliptic]].<ref name="jpldata" />
The body's [[observation arc]] begins with its first observation by [[Spacewatch]] at [[Kitt Peak National Observatory]] in October 1991, almost 10 years prior to its official discovery observation by NEAT at Palomar.<ref name="MPC-object" />

This [[minor planet]] was named after American astronaut and mission specialist [[Laurel Clark]] (1961–2003), who was killed in the [[Space Shuttle Columbia disaster|reentry disaster]] of [[Space Shuttle Columbia]] on 1 February 2003. The approved naming citation was published by the [[Minor Planet Center]] on 6 August 2003 ({{small|[[Minor Planet Circulars|M.P.C.]] 49283}}).<ref name="MPC-Circulars-Archive" />
