The name ''Ābshīneh'' is derived from Western [[Middle Iranian]] ''*āp-šēnag'', which ultimately comes from [[Proto-Iranian]] ''*āp-'' + ''*xšaina-'' + ''*-ka-''. The first element means "water", and the second means "shiny".
