The [[libretto]], by [[Antoine Danchet]], is based on cantos IV, VI and VII of [[Ludovico Ariosto|Ariosto]]'s [[epic poetry|epic poem]] ''[[Orlando furioso]]'' and tells of the love of the enchantress Alcine for the [[paladin]] Astolphe ([[Astolfo]]).
