'''Araioses''' is the easternmost city in the [[Brazil]]ian [[States of Brazil|state]] of [[Maranhão]]. It lies near the [[Parnaíba River]]'s [[River delta|delta]], and its territory also include the Canárias, Desgraça, Coroatá and Grande de Paulino islands, apart from several smaller islands.
== History ==

The municipality is in the northeastern state of Maranhão, and is one of the gateways to the Delta river.

The municipality of Araioses comprises an area of {{convert|1782.5|km2|sqmi}}. Including the mainland and island (Canary Island, Ilha do Caju, etc.). It is located at an altitude of 6 feet above sea level. It lies to the east, in the microregion of the Parnaíba Low, limited to the North by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south with the municipalities of Magallanes and San Bernardo de Almeida, the East with the Parnaíba River, and to the west with the municipalities of Water sweet and Santana do Maranhão. Its population, according to Census 2010 is 42,505 inhabitants, 12,045 in the urban and the rural area 30,460 people. Its density is {{convert|23.84|PD/km2|PD/sqmi}}. It is currently one of the poorest municipalities in Brazil and one of the worst human development indices.
