Bigode started his career playing for [[Clube Atlético Mineiro|Atlético Mineiro]], of his home city [[Belo Horizonte]], [[Minas Gerais|Minas Gerais state]].<ref name="enciclopedialance">{{cite book | title = Enciclopédia do Futebol Brasileiro Lance Volume 1 | publisher=Aretê Editorial S/A | location = Rio de Janeiro | year = 2001 | pages = 36| isbn = 85-88651-01-7}}</ref> He won the [[Campeonato Mineiro]] twice, in 1941 and in 1942.<ref name="enciclopedialance"/> He then moved to [[Fluminense Football Club|Fluminense]] of [[Rio de Janeiro]] in 1943, where he won the [[Campeonato Carioca]] in 1946.<ref name="enciclopedialance"/>  After leaving Fluminense in 1949, Bigode joined his former club's rivals [[Clube de Regatas do Flamengo|Flamengo]] in 1950, where he stayed until 1952, when he returned to Fluminense, and retired in 1956.<ref name="enciclopedialance"/>

Bigode played eleven matches for the [[Brazil national football team|Brazil national team]] between 1949 and 1953.<ref name="enciclopedialance"/> In [[South American Championship 1949|1949]], he won the [[Copa América|South American Championship]].<ref name="enciclopedialance"/> He was also part of the Brazilian team that finished as the [[1950 FIFA World Cup]]'s runners-up, after being defeated 2–1 by [[Uruguay national football team|Uruguay]] at [[Estádio do Maracanã]], in what is known as the [[Uruguay v Brazil (World Cup 1950)|Maracanazo]].<ref name="enciclopedialance"/> In this game Bigode was in poor form, as [[Alcides Ghiggia]] dribbled him in both Uruguayan goals. However, it was goalkeeper [[Moacyr Barbosa]] who was blamed for the defeat.
