Together with the fortresses of Grădiștea and Tetoiu, it was part of an ingenious defensive system in the southeastern part of the residence of the Dacian kings in Sarmizegetusa.
Buridava was the chief trading center of the tribe of the [[Burs (Dacia)|Buri]] {{sfn|Grant|1986|p=125}} It was located at Ocnița{{sfn|MacKenzie|1986|p=67}}

A fragment of a vase carrying the inscription BUR, indicates the name of the Dacian tribe Buridavensi  {{sfn| MacKenzie |1986|p=66}} In addition to the inscriptions in Latin capitals and cursives uncovered in 1973 and 1978, two inscriptions in Greek were discovered in the same years. They both date from the time of Augustus {{sfn| MacKenzie |1986|p=67}}
