The municipality has long been the principal town of the district. In 1858, the municipality of [[Linescio]] was separated from it.

After the Second World War a rapid diversification of the historical heritage began. In 1962, the Museo di Valmaggia was founded to preserve and show the material heritage of the valley. Cevio has an area, {{as of|1997|lc=on}}, of {{convert|151.42|km2|sqmi|sp=us}}.  Of this area, {{convert|0.59|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 0.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while {{convert|9.56|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 6.3% is forested.   Of the rest of the land, {{convert|0.76|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 0.5% is settled (buildings or roads), {{convert|0.89|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 0.6% is either rivers or lakes and {{convert|2.83|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 1.9% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.1%.  Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests.  Of the agricultural land, 0.2% is used for growing crops.  All the water in the municipality is flowing water. The municipality is located in the Vallemaggia district.  It is the center of the Rovana sub-district and is located at the [[confluence]] of the [[Maggia (river)|Maggia]] and Rovana rivers. Cevio consists of a number of scattered settlements. Particularly interesting is the hamlet Boschetto (almost abandoned), which has preserved the structure of the rural seventeenth-century village intact. Most of the population ({{as of|2000|lc=on}}) speaks [[Italian language]] (387 or 77.9%), with [[German language|German]] being second most common (54 or 10.9%) and [[Spanish language|Spanish]] being third (21 or 4.2%).  There are 12 people who speak [[French language|French]] and 1 person who speaks [[Romansh language|Romansh]].<ref name=STAT2000/>  The inhabitants of Cevio speak the alpine dialect of the lombard language, one of the four existing dialects, still maintaining standard [[Italian language|Italian]] as an official language.
Of the 476 residents, 364 (76.47 percent) are Swiss citizens. The largest non-Swiss groups are from [[Italy]], [[Spain]], [[Portugal]], [[Bosnia and Herzegovina]] and [[Sri Lanka]]. The unusually high number of non-Swiss in the municipality is due to the abundance of jobs in the quarries and hospital.
{{as of|2008}}, the gender distribution of the population was 50.7% male and 49.3% female.  The population was made up of 512 Swiss men (41.9% of the population), and 107 (8.8%) non-Swiss men. In Cevio about 146 or (29.4%) of the population have completed non-mandatory [[Education in Switzerland#Secondary|upper secondary education]], and 40 or (8.0%) have completed additional higher education (either [[List of universities in Switzerland|university]] or a {{Lang|de|[[Fachhochschule]]}}).  Of the 40 who completed tertiary schooling, 50.0% were Swiss men, 35.0% were Swiss women.<ref name=STAT2000/>
In Cevio there were a total of 197 students ({{as of|2009|lc=on}}).  The Ticino [[Education in Switzerland|education system]] provides up to three years of non-mandatory [[kindergarten]] and in Cevio there were 23 children in kindergarten.  The primary school program lasts for five years and includes both a standard school and a special school.  In the municipality, 62 students attended the standard primary schools and 2 students attended the special school.  In the lower secondary school system, students either attend a two-year middle school followed by a two-year pre-apprenticeship or they attend a four-year program to prepare for higher education.  There were 49 students in the two-year middle school, while 17 students were in the four-year advanced program.
The upper secondary school includes several options, but at the end of the upper secondary program, a student will be prepared to enter a trade or to continue on to a university or college. The professional program lasts three years and prepares a student for a job in engineering, nursing, computer science, business, tourism and similar fields.
