He was the son of [[John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt]] and Lady Frances Powlett, and succeeded his grandfather, [[Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough]] in the [[Earldom of Peterborough|earldom]].{{cn|date=August 2024}}
