Chen was born in [[Lanxi County]], [[Jinhua]], Zhejiang, in 1966.<ref name="acwf2015"/> She received her bachelor's degree in [[chemical engineering]] from the [[Zhejiang University]] in 1988.<ref name="scmp"/><ref name="acwf2012"/> She obtained a master's degree at [[Tsinghua University]] in 1991.<ref name="acwf2015"/> She attended the [[Academy of Military Medical Sciences]] where she obtained her doctor's degree in 1998.<ref name="acwf2015"/> She became a faculty member of the academy upon graduation.
