The '''Collector of Internal Revenue for the First District of Illinois''' was an office created by the [[Revenue Act of 1862]], the holder of which was responsible for the collection of [[income tax]] in the First District of [[Illinois]], headquartered in [[Chicago]]. The First District was the largest tax collection district in the State of Illinois, and numerous important political figures received a [[Spoils system|patronage appointment]] to the office. By 1920, the First District had grown to encompass the counties of [[Boone County, Illinois|Boone]], [[Bureau County, Illinois|Bureau]], [[Carroll County, Illinois|Carroll]], [[Cook County, Illinois|Cook]], [[DeKalb County, Illinois|DeKalb]], [[DuPage County, Illinois|DuPage]], [[Grundy County, Illinois|Grundy]], [[Henderson County, Illinois|Henderson]], [[Henry County, Illinois|Henry]], [[Jo Daviess County, Illinois|Jo Daviess]], [[Kane County, Illinois|Kane]], [[Kankakee County, Illinois|Kankakee]], [[Kendall County, Illinois|Kendall]], [[Knox County, Illinois|Knox]], [[Lake County, Illinois|Lake]], [[LaSalle County, Illinois|LaSalle]], [[Lee County, Illinois|Lee]], [[McHenry County, Illinois|McHenry]], [[Marshall County, Illinois|Marshall]], [[Mercer County, Illinois|Mercer]], [[Ogle County, Illinois|Ogle]], [[Peoria County, Illinois|Peoria]], [[Putnam County, Illinois|Putnam]], [[Rock Island County, Illinois|Rock Island]], [[Stark County, Illinois|Stark]], [[Stephenson County, Illinois|Stephenson]], [[Warren County, Illinois|Warren]], [[Whiteside County, Illinois|Whiteside]], [[Will County, Illinois|Will]], and [[Winnebago County, Illinois|Winnebago]].
