Denmark was represented at the [[Eurovision Song Contest 2005]] with the song "Talking to You", written by Jacob Launbjerg and Andreas Mørck, and performed by [[Jakob Sveistrup]]. The Danish participating broadcaster, {{lang|da|[[DR (broadcaster)|Danmarks Radio]]|i=no}} (DR), organised the national final {{lang|da|[[Dansk Melodi Grand Prix]] 2005|i=no}} in order to select its entry for the contest. Ten songs competed in a televised show where "{{lang|da|Tænder på dig|i=no}}" performed by Jakob Sveistrup was the winner as decided upon through two rounds of public voting. The song was later translated from Danish to English for Eurovision and was titled "Talking to You".
Denmark competed in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 19 May 2005. Performing during the show in position 24, "Talking to You" was announced among the top 10 entries of the semi-final and therefore qualified to compete in the final on 21 May. It was later revealed that Denmark placed third out of the 25 participating countries in the semi-final with 185 points. In the final, Denmark performed in position 13 and placed ninth out of the 24 participating countries, scoring 125 points.

Prior to the 2005 contest, {{lang|da|[[DR (broadcaster)|Danmarks Radio]]|i=no}} (DR) had participated in the [[Eurovision Song Contest]] representing Denmark thirty-three times since its first entry in 1957.<ref>{{cite web |title=Denmark Country Profile |url=http://www.eurovision.tv/page/history/by-country/country?country=8 |access-date=17 August 2014 |publisher=[[European Broadcasting Union|EBU]]}}</ref> It had won the contest, to this point, on two occasions: in {{Esccnty|Denmark|t=1963|y=1963}} with the song "{{lang|da|[[Dansevise]]|i=no}}" performed by [[Grethe Ingmann|Grethe]] and [[Jørgen Ingmann]], and in {{Esccnty|Denmark|t=2000|y=2000}} with the song "[[Fly on the Wings of Love]]" performed by [[Olsen Brothers]]. As part of its duties as participating broadcaster, DR organises the selection of its entry in the Eurovision Song Contest and broadcasts the event in the country. DR opened a submission period between 11 August 2004 and 10 October 2004 for composers to submit their entries. All composers and lyricists were required to be Danish citizens or have been registered as a Danish resident from 12 August 2004 to 21 May 2004. The final took place on 12 February 2005 where the winner was determined over two rounds of public voting. In the first round of voting the top five advanced to the superfinal. In the superfinal, the winner, "{{lang|da|Tænder på dig|i=no}}" performed by [[Jakob Sveistrup]], was selected. According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country, the "[[Big Four (Eurovision)|Big Four]]" (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom), and the ten highest placed finishers in the {{escyr|2004||2004 contest}} are required to qualify from the semi-final on 19 May 2005 in order to compete for the final on 21 May 2005; the top ten countries from the semi-final progress to the final.
