Founded in [[Vienna]] in 1952 by the [[Austria]]n engineer and private scholar {{interlanguage link|Robert Haardt|de}} (1884–1962), the Society's name is an hommage to [[Franciscans|Franciscan friar]], [[cosmography|cosmographer]], [[cartography|cartographer]], and publisher [[Vincenzo Coronelli]] (1650–1718).
