Born in 1951, the son of politician [[Edgard Pisani]] and historian {{ill| Fresnette Pisani-Ferry|fr}}, Jean Pisani-Ferry initially trained as an engineer. He has a Master in mathematics. Early on he held positions in research and government in France.<ref name="ref:10"/> Pisani-Ferry joined the [[European Commission]] in 1989 as economic adviser to the European Commission,<ref name="ref:8"/> specifically the Director-General of [[Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs|DG ECFIN]].<ref name="ref:10"/>
From 1992 to 1997 he was the director of [[Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales|CEPII]], a French economics research centre.<ref name="ref:8"/> In 1997, he became senior economic adviser to the French minister of Finance and was later appointed executive president of the French prime minister's Council of Economic Analysis (2001–2002).<ref name="ref:8"/> He served as senior adviser to the director of the [[Trésor public|French Treasury]] from 2002 until 2004.<ref name="ref:10"/> In 2005 and until 2013 he was the founding director of the think tank [[Bruegel (institution)|Bruegel]] in Brussels.<ref name="ref:8"/> He was president of the French economic association from 2006 until 2007.<ref name="ref:10"/>
