Born in [[Yorkshire]] at [[Bardsey, West Yorkshire|Bardsey]] in about 1837, Bleakley made his debut in [[first-class cricket]] for the [[Gentlemen of the North]] against the [[Gentlemen of the South]] at [[The Oval]] in July 1858, later playing in the return fixture played at [[Broughton Cricket Club Ground|Salford]] in August.<ref name="FCM">{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/37/37924/First-Class_Matches.html |title=First-Class Matches played by John Whittington |publisher=CricketArchive |accessdate=2019-11-19}}</ref> In September of the same year, he played for [[Manchester Cricket Club|Manchester]] in a first-class fixture against [[Sussex County Cricket Club|Sussex]] at [[G. P. Codie's Ground|Eccles]].
