This gene encodes a cytosolic [[enzyme]] which is responsible for the [[metabolism]] of [[cysteine]] conjugates of certain [[halogenated]] [[alkenes]] and [[alkanes]]. This metabolism leads to the formation of reactive metabolites which can lead to [[nephrotoxicity]] and [[neurotoxicity]].<ref name="entrez" />
