Previously, Khanbu was a separate [[Village development committee (Nepal)|village development committee]] in [[Udayapur District]] of [[Sagarmatha Zone]] in [[Eastern Development Region, Nepal|Eastern Region]] of [[Nepal]]. Fulfilling the requirement of the new [[Constitution of Nepal 2015]], [[Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (Nepal)|MoFALD]] replaced all old [[Village development committee (Nepal)|VDCs]] and Municipalities into 753 new local level body ([[List of cities in Nepal|Municipality]]), thus Khanbu was merged with [[Triyuga]] Municipality.
