'''Lőrinci''' is a town in [[Heves County]], [[Hungary]], beside of the [[Zagyva]] river. As of 2022 census, it has a population of 5352 (see Demographics). The town located beside of the (Nr. 81) [[Hatvan–Fiľakovo railway]] line and the [[Main road 21 (Hungary)|main road 21]]. The [[M3 motorway (Hungary)|M3 motorway]] is 7.4 km far. The town has a railway stop and a station: ''Selyp'' in the north, ''Lőrinci'' in the middle. The ''Mátravidéki Erőmű'' station in the south have not public transport.
==History==
Artifacts from the [[Bronze Age]] were found in the settlement. Its church is first mentioned in a charter in 1267 in the form of ''Ecclesia de Laurencio''. The name of the settlement derives from the personal name [[Lőrinc]] (Laurence). The northern part of today's town was an independent village called ''Selyp'', which belonged to the [[Rátót (genus)|Rátót]], then the {{Interlanguage link|Ákos (clan)|lt=Ákos|hu|Ákos nemzetség}} clan, while Lőrinci belonged to the [[Roman Catholic Diocese of Oradea Mare|bishop of Oradea]]. It was occupied by the [[Ottoman Hungary|Ottomans]] in 1544 and Selyp was depopulated. In the 17th century, it became the property of the {{Interlanguage link|Hungarian Chamber|lt=Royal Chamber|fr|Chambre de Hongrie}}, and its church was built in 1695. [[Antal Grassalkovich|Count Antal Grassalkovich]] became the landlord in 1730. The population was engaged in transporting [[salt]], a {{Interlanguage link|Salt office|lt=treasury salt office|de|Salzamt}} and a salt distributor operated in the settlement. In the 19th century, the population exceeded 1000, and ''Selyp'' was then annexed to Lőrinci. A [[1863–1875 cholera pandemic|cholera epidemic]] devastated the settlement in 1873. Baron Rezső Schossberger began the industrialization of Lőrinci: a {{Interlanguage link|Selyp Sugar Factory|lt=sugar factory|hu|Selypi cukorgyár}}, a mill and a [[cement]] factory were built. The family also built a castle in 1924. The {{Interlanguage link|Mátravidék Power Plant|lt=Mátravidék Power Plant|hu|Mátravidéki Erőmű}} was built in 1940, and then the [[lignite]] mine was opened. After 1945, a [[Brickworks|brick factory]], a [[ceramic]] and [[tile]] factory and a [[Cheesemaking|cheese factory]] were established. A [[fishing]] lake was created next to the power plant. The [[Mining community|mining settlement]] next to the lignite mine ([[Petőfibánya]]) became an independent village in 1989. The settlement received town status in 1992. The sugar factory closed in 1998. The Schossberger castle, which was damaged in the [[Hungary in World War II|Second World War]], was renovated in 2004 and the town library moved into it. ==Demographics==
According the 2022 census, 86.6% of the population were of Hungarian ethnicity, 1.5% were [[Romani people|Gypsies]] and 13.0% were did not wish to answer. The religious distribution was as follows: 32.0% [[Catholic Church in Hungary|Roman Catholic]], 2.7% [[Reformed Church in Hungary|Calvinist]], 0.6% [[Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Hungary|Lutheran]], 0.5% [[Hungarian Greek Catholic Church|Greek Catholic]] 16.7% non-denominational, and 44.7% did not wish to answer.
