It was situated upon the road from the latter to [[Pallantium (Arcadia)|Pallantium]] and [[Tegea]]. Here a battle was fought between the [[Mantineia]]ns and Tegeatae, 423&nbsp;BCE, and between the [[Achaean League|Achaeans]] and [[ancient Sparta|Spartan]] king [[Cleomenes III]], 226&nbsp;BCE.<ref>{{Cite Pausanias|8|44|1}}</ref><ref>{{Cite Polybius|2.51, 2.55}}</ref> [[Thucydides]] places it in the district of [[Oresthis]].<ref name=Thucydides/>
