He is a member of the [[Democratic Party (Italy)|Democratic Party]] and was elected at the [[Senate of the Republic (Italy)|Senate of the Republic]] for two legislatures ([[Legislature XIV of Italy|XIV]], [[Legislature XVI of Italy|XVI]])<ref name=sen16/><ref name=sen14/> and at the [[Chamber of Deputies (Italy)|Chamber of Deputies]] for the [[Legislature XV of Italy|XV legislature]] in 2006.<ref name=cam/>

Di Girolamo served as [[Mayor of Terni]] for two terms (2009-2018) and President of the [[Province of Terni]] from 2014 to 2016.<ref name=interior/>
