The club was founded in 1882, at the same time as the [[Clippens F.C.|Clippens]] club in the same town.  The club won 6 out of 8 matches in its first half-season.<ref>{{cite journal |title=Linwood Football Club Conversazione |journal=Greenock Advertiser |date=30 March 1882 |page=2}}</ref>  One of the defeats was at [[Johnstone Rovers F.C.|Johnstone Rovers]] in the Johnstone & District Cup<ref>{{cite web |title=Johnstone & District Cup Competitions |url=http://sfha.org.uk/johnstonedistrictcup.htm |website=Scottish Football Historical Archive |access-date=8 May 2023}}</ref> - the club's first competitive match.
Whereas Clippens joined the [[Scottish Football Association]] almost immediately, Linwood waited until 1883 to do so.<ref>{{cite book |title=Scottish FA Minutes 1881–84 |date=21 August 1883 |publisher=Scottish Football Association |location=Glasgow |page=142}}</ref>  Although Linwood joined the association in time to play in the [[1883–84 Scottish Cup]], it was too late to play in the first round of the [[Renfrewshire Cup]].
