Competing for the [[Soviet Union]] as Yelena Zhupiyeva, she won a silver medal in the 10,000 m at the [[1987 World Championships in Athletics|1987 World Championships]] in Rome and a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the [[1988 Summer Olympics|1988 Seoul Olympics]]. As Yelena Vyazova, she won the [[1992 CIS Athletics Championships]] 10,000 m title, and competed at the [[1992 Summer Olympics|1992 Barcelona Olympics]].
