He was the son of [[Zaixun, Prince Rui|Zaixun]] and a cousin of [[Puyi]], the Last Emperor of China. He married Huang Yongni (黃詠霓), an [[Hui people|ethnic Hui]] [[Beijing opera]] actress who is better known by her [[stage name]] "[[Xueyanqin]]" (雪艷琴), and converted to Islam some time afterwards, taking the name of Ali.<ref name=":0"/> Their marriage ended with divorce in 1934, though Pugong remained Muslim, being present at the opening of the [[Tokyo Mosque]] in 1938.
