Wu earned bachelor's and master's degrees in 1983 and 1986 from [[Peking University]].<ref name="mactutor"/><ref name="asc"/> She completed her doctorate in 1990 from [[Yale University]], under the supervision of [[Ronald Coifman]].<ref>{{mathgenealogy|id=39115}}.</ref> After a temporary instructorship at [[New York University]], she became an assistant professor at [[Northwestern University]]. She moved in 1996 to the [[University of Iowa]] and again to the [[University of Maryland, College Park]] in 1998.
