Statskog was established in 1860 as '''Statens skovvæsen''' and was organized under the [[Ministry of the Interior (Norway)|Ministry of the Interior]]. In 1957 it was separated from the [[Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food|Ministry of Agriculture]] under the name '''Direktoratet for statens skoger'''. Between 300,000 and 400,000 cubic meters are felled annually in Statskog-owned forests by hired contractors. The timber is then used for a variety of commercial purposes.
