His early career was spent both on royal service, fighting in [[Edward III]]'s [[Hundred Years' War|French wars]], as well as overseeing the activities of the local [[Court of King's Bench (England)|King's Bench]] of the [[West Riding]].<ref>Walker, S.J., ''Political Culture in Late Medieval England'' (Manchester, 2006), 84.</ref> in and also on [[pilgrimage]] in the [[Middle East]].
