The journal was initially created as a way to involve historians in the creation of ''Australia 1838'', the second volume in the ten volume work ''Australians: a historical library'', which was created by the Australian historical profession as a contribution to the Bicentenary of European colonisation. After ''Australians 1838'' was completed in 1984, the journal became independent of the project. <ref name="Australians1838"/>
