He was the son of [[William Murray Tuke]] (1822–1903), who had a "substantial tea business in York".<ref name=Barclays>{{cite web|title=William Tuke (Chairman 1934-1936)|url=https://www.archive.barclays.com/items/show/19493|website=Barclays|accessdate=7 August 2015}}</ref> He was descended from the Quaker tea merchant and philanthropist [[William Tuke]] (1732–1822). He was educated at the former Oliver's Mount School, [[Scarborough, North Yorkshire|Scarborough]].<ref name="whoswho"/>
