Modern fireplaces are nearly always deep, with parallel sides and a low lintel—the Rumford firebox is shallow, with a small, low vertical back wall, sides that slant outward at a wide angle, and a fireback surface angled forward to a high lintel and a slot-like draft opening. They really could not be more different.
