It's assumed that the huge majority of South African photographers have carried out some photography in South Africa, so this category simply subsumes South African photographers as a subcategory; South African photographers are not additionally listed individually below. As for non–South African photographers, they are listed if they have done a substantial amount of work in South Africa (at a minimum, one book devoted to South Africa) or if their work in South Africa is of unusual historical or other significance. Non–South African photographers who have merely made short visits to South Africa and had miscellaneous photographs published should not be specified below.
