Format
The tournament was played in three different stages (first, second and final rounds). In the First round, the 24 participants were divided in four groups of six teams each. A single round-robin format was played within each group to determine the teams group position, the three best teams of each group (total of 12 teams) progressed to the next round. In the Second round, the 12 teams were divided in three groups of four teams. A single round-robin format was played within each group to determine the teams group position, the two best teams of each group and the two best third places (total of 8 teams) progressed to the next round. The Final round was played in a single elimination format, with placement matches determining the top eight positions. Starting at the quarterfinals, winners advanced to the semifinals while losers advanced to the placement matches (5th-8th semifinal).
