Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz (1793−1831) — renowned 19th-century German−Estonian−Imperial Russian botanist, zoologist, entomologist, and world explorer.
- During the 1815–1818 Otto von Kotzebue expedition around the world, Eschscholtz described a number of new species found in the San Francisco Bay Area of then Spanish colonial Alta California, as well as Asia and South America.
