Treaties extended by the United States to the Panama Canal Zone Panama Canal Zone (1903–99). Although exclusive U.S. control over the Canal Zone ended in 1979, the U.S. retained the power to extend treaties to the Zone until the end of 1999, when full sovereignty over the Zone passed to Panama. A treaty extended to the Panama Canal Zone remains in force for Panama only if Panama has declared its succession to the treaty.
