INS Ajay was the first warship[1][2] built in Independent India[3] and the namesake of the Ajay-class patrol vessels. She was built by the Hooghly Dock and Port Engineers (Now Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers) and was delivered to the Indian Navy on 21 September 1960.[citation needed] In July 1974 the Indian Navy gave her to the Bangladesh Navy.[4] (Her sister ship INS Akshay (P3136) had been transferred as BNS Padma in 1973). INS Ajay served in the Bangladesh Navy as BNS Surma.[citation needed]
