Until 1949 the Monuments Men checked every work of art and sent many back to their country of origin. Then the cold war unfolded in Europe and the Americans made the remaining 10,600 the responsibility of the Bavarian State Secretary Hans Ehard. The Americans imposed only one condition: “That the search for the origin of the pieces will be continued”. Ehard passes the responsibility on to the Director of the Bavarian Staatsgemäldesammlung (State Paintings Collections), Eberhard Hanfstaengl, who is a cousin of Hitler’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ernst Hanfstaengl.
