The Japan Socialist Party (日本社会党, Nippon/Nihon shakai-tō) was the first legal socialist party in the Empire of Japan.[2] One year after its foundation on February 24, 1906, the party was banned by the Japanese government on February 22, 1907.[3] The party was founded from the merger of the former "Japan Socialist Party" led by Sakai Toshihiko and the "Nihon Heimin-tō" (日本平民党, which literally means "Common People's Party of Japan") led by Kōnirō Nishikawa, where it was agreed upon to name the new party as "Japan Socialist Party".[1][4] Some Chinese Marxists, like Meijiu Jing, were also influenced by this party.[5]
