Vavřinec is a municipality and village in Kutná Hora District in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 600 inhabitants.

Administrative parts

The villages of Chmeliště and Žíšov are administrative parts of Vavřinec.

Etymology

Th village was named after the patron of the original Romanesque church that stood here – Saint Lawrence (Czech: svatý Vavřinec).[2]

Geography

Vavřinec is located about 17 kilometres (11 mi) west of Kutná Hora and 39 km (24 mi) southeast of Prague. It lies in the Upper Sázava Hills. The highest point is the hill Dubina at 440 m (1,440 ft) above sea level. The Výrovka River flows through the municipality and supplies the Vavřinecký Pond, which is the largest body of water in the district. There are also several other fishponds.

History

The first written mention of Vavřinec is from 1318.[3] The settlement and the local church were founded in the 14th century by monks from the Sázava Monastery.[2]

Transport

The village of Chmeliště is located on the railway line KolínLedečko.[6] In the municipal territory is also the train station Hatě, which serves the neighbouring village of Hatě.

Church of Saint Nicholas

The main landmark of Vavřinec is the Church of Saint Lawrence. The current building, which replaced the old medieval church, was built in the Historicist style in 1876–1877.[7] The Church of Saint Nicholas is located in Žíšov. It was originally an early Gothic church from the second half of the 13th century. In the first half of the 18th century, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style.[8]
