The Baltic Proper covers the part of the Baltic Sea between the Åland Sea and the Danish straits.[1] The Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Riga are not included. The border in the west to the Danish water is according to SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) the same as the bridges over the Great Belt, Little Belt and Øresund. Other parts of the Baltic Sea not included in the Baltic Proper include the Gulf of Bothnia and the Kattegat.[2]
