Dale K. Van Kley (July 31, 1941 – March 14, 2023)[1][2] was an American historian and professor of history at the Ohio State University.[3] Van Kley wrote numerous books and articles, and taught and conducted research throughout North America and Europe.[3] He is best known for[citation needed][original research?] his prize-winning[which?] book The Religious Origins of the French Revolution: From Calvin to the Civil Constitution, 1560-1791 (1996).[citation needed] While extensive and diverse, his life's work focused on the contributions that Augustinian theology made to the concepts of liberty that underlay the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.[citation needed]
