James William Naish[1] is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Rushcliffe since 2024. He defeated Conservative incumbent Ruth Edwards.[2]
Early life
Naish was born in Sheffield and grew up on his family farm in South Wheatley.[3] He attended Queen Elizabeth's High School in Gainsborough.[4] After graduating from the University of Oxford, Naish took a role as a consultant for the Fortune 500 company Accenture, before taking a sabbatical with the Tony Blair Institute to advise Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. [5] He has since worked as director of property auction franchise Open Door Auctions, and as a Stakeholder Engagement Programme Manager for Northern Powergrid.[6]
Political career
Naish was elected to Bassetlaw District Council in May 2019, representing the predominantly rural Sturton ward.[7] Naish was elected Leader of the council in September 2022.[8] Naish was selected by the Labour Party as their parliamentary candidate for Rushcliffe in February 2024 and was elected in July 2024.[citation needed] He is the first Labour MP for the seat since 1966.[9]
Personal life
Naish is the nephew of the former Downing Street Press Secretary for Tony Blair, Alastair Campbell.[10]
