British Columbia has 161 municipalities,[1] out of which 48 are categorized as district municipalities.[2] According to the 2021 Canadian census, British Columbia is the third most populous province in Canada, with 5,000,879 inhabitants, and the fourth largest province by land area, covering 920,686.55 km2 (355,479.06 sq mi).[3] District municipalities, towns, cities and villages in British Columbia are referred to as municipalities and all are included in local governments, which may be incorporated under the Local Government Act of 2015. In order for a municipality in British Columbia to be categorized as a district municipality, its area must be greater than 800 hectares (2,000 acres) and its population density must be lower than 5 residents per hectare; there is no population requirement.[4] All municipalities have councils.[5] Of British Columbia's 48 district municipalities, the first to incorporate as a district municipality was North Cowichan on June 18, 1873, while the most recent community to incorporate as a district municipality was the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) on February 6, 2009.[6][7] Although portrayed as a regional municipality in its name, the NRRM is classified as a district municipality.[7]
